FAQs

Lauren, I’m interested in hiring you—what do I do now?

Great! I’m excited to talk with you about your writing! First, you’ll send an inquiry to lpmaddoxeditor@gmail.com describing your project and what service you’re interested in contracting. If I am a good fit for you, I will ask you to send me the Word document with your manuscript, double-spaced with 11 or 12 point font, so that I can provide you with a clear estimate for the project. Once you agree to the estimate, I will send you a project contract outlining the terms of our work together and a bill for half the total cost of the service.

Are there things you will not edit?

I retain the right to refuse editing a manuscript that makes me uncomfortable, especially work that promotes sexism, racism, queerphobia, or excessive violence.

I am a self-publishing author with concerns about protecting my intellectual property.

Your writing is yours, no matter what level of editing service you have contracted. If you have any concerns about sending me your work at any stage of this service, I am happy to sign an NDA to guarantee that your work remains confidential.

How is payment set up?

With the initial project contract, I will send you an invoice for half of the total project cost. Once I have finished the contracted work for your project, I will send you another invoice for the second half of the total cost and a watermarked preview of the completed revisions. Upon final payment, I will release the unmarked, editable file to you.

What kind of manuscripts are in your wheelhouse?

I have a lot of experience with and love for both fiction and academic writing. I have worked with writers in a university setting for 6 years, and enjoy learning from all disciplines. As a reader of fiction, I gravitate towards stories that focus on literary realism, fabulism, and gothicism— but I am a wide reader with an interest in many genres!

Why do I have to sign a contract?

I use project contracts to protect your interests and mine! With a contract, there is a verifiable and binding document recording that we have agreed to work together. This guarantees that we are both on the same page about the terms of service for your project.
